    Reading Your Tire Tread

Find out what causes uneven tire tread wear, how you can prevent it, and what to do next.

    1. Tread is worn down in the center of the tire.

If the tread is worn down in the center of the tire, it is possible that the tire has been run in an overinflated condition for a significant amount of time. To prevent this problem, check the recommended air pressure and adjust the air in the tire accordingly.

    2. Tread is worn on the inside and outside shoulders of the tire.

If the tread is worn down on both shoulders of the tire, than the tire has probably been run in an underinflated condition for a significant amount of time. To prevent this problem, check the recommended air pressure and adjust the air in the tire accordingly.

    3. Tread is worn on the inside or the outside shoulder of the tire.

If the tread is worn on either the inside or outside shoulder of the tire, than the wheel might be out of alignment. You should have your vehicle serviced by a professional shop that can perform a correct wheel alignment.

    4. Tread is worn to the left or right of the center.

If the tread is worn to the left or right of the center, it is likely that the tire is either out of balance or that there might be a problem with the vehicle's steering or suspension. This condition is called "cupping" and should be referred to a professional mechanic for service.
