A world leader in tire technology
Bridgestone was founded in Japan in 1931 by Shojiro Ishibashi, who had a thriving business making and selling Jika-tabi (socks with rubber soles, used as work shoes). Passenger cars were becoming more popular and Ishibashi saw huge potential in manufacturing tires for these vehicles. He used money from his family business to launch a tire company, choosing an English translation of his surname-stone bridge-as the company name.
Today's Bridgestone Tire is a world leader in tire technology, and this spirit shows in innovations like the eco-friendly Ecopia line of tires, which greatly reduce rolling resistance for better fuel economy. In the words of Shojiro Ishibashi, Bridgestone remains dedicated to "serving society with superior quality."
