When General Tire was founded in 1915 by William F. O'Neil and Winfred E. Fouse, there were already more than 300 companies manufacturing tires. In an effort to find General's niche, O'Neil decided that instead of trying to provide Original Equipment (OE) tires to auto manufacturers, his company would focus on creating premium replacement tires for trucks. By specializing in the truck tire market, General established a reputation for innovation that eventually helped them break into the OE and passenger car markets.
